If you’ve ever had PCOS or thyroid disease… you’ve probably been where I was tonight. You might even be there now. Have you ever felt SO discouraged, like you would NEVER reach your goals? Have you ever felt SO drained of energy, that it literally fills your HEART with pain because your mind wants to workout…but your body feels like it was hit by a bus and then immediately run over by a train? Have you EVER been eating relatively well for a while and exercising a few times per week, only to see NO results or SLOW results? —> You guessed it. I’ve been there. I know where you are, where you have been.


I know our struggles are frustrating. Just tonight, every muscle and joint in my body throbbed in exhaustion. I felt like I just ran a marathon then went into a boxing rink without any gloves. But IT’S NOT FAIR. I have weight loss goals! I need to exercise to lose my weight! Not feeling “like a normal person” just isn’t fair. But hold on…let me stop you.


Sweet sister, YOUR body WAS made differently than those “normal” people. On purpose. God didn’t make you susceptible to these things by mistake. Don’t get me wrong — you ARE going to face major challenges in achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight and lifestyle. You ARE going to have to work harder than the “normal” people to lose weight. You ARE going to have to eat MUCH healthier than “normal” people. And guess what…you ARE going to have to exercise consistently! Okay…so you probably hate me right now after reading all of that. Yes, I said it. There IS no magic pill. But read the questions and answers below to find out more about YOUR body, YOUR struggles, and how YOU can overcome them!



Q: What about when I don’t have enough energy to exercise?

A: I can relate. In fact, 5 out of 7 days of the week I feel the EXACT same way. Remember when I talked about how I was feeling really bad earlier tonight? I actually sat on my couch and bawled my eyes out because of how FRUSTRATING it is to NOT have “normal” people energy. One question I have for you is: How miserable really are you? The reason why I ask this is because it’s SO easy to get caught up in a pity party for ourselves (**guilty for doing this on occasion**), but we forget that we are VICTORIOUS children of God. We weren’t made for pity parties, we were made to be HEALTHY.


We have to ENVISION ourselves as healthy women, at a healthy weight, feeling FANTASTIC both physically and mentally. It will be a BATTLE to get there, but it IS possible. —> Did you KNOW that in order to overcome the struggles of PCOS and thyroid disease…we actually should be exercising on a regular basis? It hardly makes sense… You’re probably thinking, “So, to NOT feel so exhausted and WIPED OUT all the time, I’m supposed to EXERCISE when I LITERALLY feel like a dump truck ran over me?” Yes. Yes you are. It won’t be easy. But if you are truly sick and tired of being sick and tired…the road back to health is a rocky one, but you can do it if you are determined enough. Trust me. I have been to the lowest of low points.



Q: What about when I have been exercising and eating right for WEEKS — but I’m not seeing the scale budge?

Stay strong, sister. Nutrition is KEY, exercise is second-key, and then of course our hormones are third-key. It can get discouraging because you feel like you are eating “normal people healthy food,” but since our bodies and hormonal systems are SUPER sensitive, it actually takes a whole different level of healthy eating to start HEALING our bodies. For us, losing weight and getting into better shape isn’t about “calories in vs. calories out.” For us, it’s more like “nourishing our bodies to help our hormones act in a more balanced way, while the calories in vs. calories out will help us lose weight while we eat exceptionally holistic and healthy.” <— Yep, super long description, but that’s really what it’s all about. Now…if you’ve been putting effort in and aren’t seeing results? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I a VICTORIOUS child of God?
    • (Romans 8:37) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
  • Did you do a good job of sticking to a plan that you KNOW is full of HEALTHY HABITS?
    • (2 Timothy 1:7) For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
  • Do you feel a difference in yourself since you’ve been keeping these habits as part of your daily activity? (Physically on the inside or outside. Stronger? Faster? More endorphins? A little more energy? More confident?) *Note: if you’ve been working out and eating healthy for like two days…you’re going to have to go longer than that. Instant gratification of fitness goals doesn’t happen for us. It doesn’t even happen for those “normal” people.
  • Are healthy habits part of taking care of yourself? And is taking care of your PHYSICAL self…part of taking care of the TEMPLE {because your body IS a temple} God gave you to go out and do HIS will?
    • (Galatians 2:20) I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
    • The life you live with your FLESH…should be lived by FAITH in the SON OF GOD. Let that sink in. He LOVED you and still does. He gave His own LIFE for YOU. Shouldn’t we be honoring our gift (our bodies) that HE gave us no matter what the number on the scale says? We aren’t defined by this number! We are defined by being children of God. And this means we should honor him and all that he has blessed us with.
    • (Philippians 1:20)As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.



Q: Why would God let my body be susceptible to these things that cause so much strife?

Remember earlier in this article when I said, “Its NOT FAIR that I am going through this! Why can’t I just be normal! It’s not FAIR that I have to work harder than everyone else to lose weight! It’s NOT FAIR that I am supposed to work out when my body feels like it was hit by a train and I am ALWAYS sooo EXHAUSTED!” <— Basically everything along those lines.


Let’s do a reality check. If you are saying “it’s not fair,” that means you are probably comparing yourself to other people. For me, it’s those “normal” people that I keep talking about. The ones who lose weight simply by eating less. The ones who can go through their days without burning out at noon. The ones who don’t experience day-to-day pain in their bodies. The ones who DON’T gain weight for no reason.

Well…they are probably saying “It’s not fair” when they look at YOU. They are going through their OWN trials. Their trials might be different than yours, but EVERYONE is going through them. Maybe their mother has cancer. Maybe they are facing unemployment. Maybe they are risking losing their home back to the bank. Who knows what they are going through, but they are going through something.  So let’s clear the air.  Saying “It’s not fair,” is NOT valid. There is no such thing as “fair” and “unfair.”


So… why would God let me go through this?


He knows you. He knew you before you were born. He also knows that you NEED Him in your life. Let me tell you, sister… we all have those desperate, low, moments of weakness. We feel discouraged. We want to quit. We want to shake our fists in the air and say “It’s not fair!”


But guess what? You were made for MORE. God never promised “no trials and tribulations.” God is letting you go through this because he wants a closer relationship with you. Guess what else? He is READY to help pull you OUT of these trials! He is ready to WALK WITH YOU right from where you are now…to the finish line!


He knows that you need Him. And guess what…in order to get out of this hole of misery…we NEED to rely on HIM. Think about it…if you weren’t going through this, you might not feel the “need” to incorporate God into your life on a daily basis. He wants you to REALIZE that you are made to have a strong, loving relationship with Him.


If you ever find yourself thinking that “This just isn’t fair,” or “Why do I have to go through this?”…I want to challenge you.  Time to re-program your mind. In those moments of weakness, instead of thinking of yourself as a victim (sounds harsh but I have been there and know that I’m saying it how it is)…so…INSTEAD of thinking of yourself as the victim of “unfairness”…ASK YOURSELF… “Am I relying on God and His strength to carry me through this trial?”


Our strength has boundaries and limits. God’s strength is limitless and readily available to you at all times. We can choose to feel like we are victims, or we can walk with our Creator and OVERCOME our challenges. Who knows… He might even use your trials to inspire and change the life of someone else who is going through the same thing. God works in mysterious ways.

{Philippians 4:13} I can do all things through him who strengthens me.



Q: What do I do when I get discouraged and just feel like throwing in the towel?

I feel like this all the time. And to be honest, I know what giving up feels like. Giving up on going towards your goals means not taking yourself as well “because it just isn’t paying off.” But let me say — taking care of yourself – even when you DON’T feel like it – DOES pay off!!

Let’s look at what NOT taking great care of yourself looks like:

  • Depression
  • More weight gain
  • Feeling sick all the time
  • Constant fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Filling our bodies with food that is slowly making our conditions worse

Let’s take a look at what TAKING CARE of yourself looks like:

  • Slowly working on balancing your hormones to a healthier level
  • Slow weight loss that WILL happen if you stay persistent with your habits (Once you get to a certain point in weight loss, it isn’t slow anymore! It will start to fall off! BONUS!)
  • Set-up for a life of being the BEST version of you
  • Setting yourself up to feel GREAT on a consistent basis, once you have been eating healthy and exercising consistently for a while
  • No more giant splurges of weight gain
  • Taking CARE of our TEMPLES that God gave to us
  • Setting good examples for our families
  • Setting good examples for our children on what “positive body image” looks like
  • Practicing “SELF-CONTROL”…which is a fruit of the Spirit.

And when you just DON’T have the STRENGTH to keep pushing forward…

THAT’S GREAT. You don’t need it. You don’t need your own strength to do what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. Why? Because you have God on your side. Though there may be tears in moments of your own weakness, asking God to help you and leaning on HIS strength is what is going to pull you along the way.

Giving up is missing out on our Father’s love. We weren’t made to be quitters. We were made to persevere in times of TRIAL and form a STRONGER RELATIONSHIP with God. Rely on Him. He loves you and wants the best for you. It won’t be easy. There will be sweat and tears. But one thing is for sure: It WILL be worth it!
