Sooo…let’s dig right in. You have PCOS or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. You might even have BOTH, like me –> since reproductive hormone disorders and thyroid issues usually go hand-in-hand.

If you are reading this article, you’ve probably put on a few pounds, and now have THE hardest time getting rid of them. You might find yourself with constant fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, headaches, cramps…you name it. When you try something new that is “supposed” to help you get healthier, you seem to ALWAYS catch yourself thinking, “WHY ISN’T THIS WORKING?!?!?!”

“WHY ISN’T THIS WORKING?!?!”

I have been there MANY times, like I’m sure all of us have with huge hormonal imbalances.

Well my sisters, I am here to help! Don’t give up hope. I PROMISE there is a solution! Brace yourselves for some hard-to-swallow truths…topped with love!

 

1. You forgot that patience is a virtue.

Uh-oh. NO I DI-IDN’T. HOLD MY EARRINGS. SHE DID NOT JUST GO THERE!

Ohhh sister…yes I did.

Now when I say that we need to be PATIENT, this covers a broad aspect of how we get frustrated.

This could mean starting a new diet plan or exercise routine and NOT seeing ANY results. You’ve been doing this CONSISTENTLY for ONE, maybe even TWO months. Let’s admit, that’s a heck of a long time you have been chopping away at this, and the scale has NOT budged! It must not be working. 

This could mean that you have been doing something that has tremendously helped you, but then you plateaued and you are getting frustrated again. It must not be working. 

Fact: If we have hormonal imbalances within our thyroids or reproductive systems, and ESPECIALLY if we are dealing with autoimmune disease (our body is attacking itself — like in Hashimoto’s) —–> I’m going to come out and flat say it. YOUR BODY NEEDS TO HEAL. There is something majorly out-of-whack going on and your body is going to need some TLC to get it back to functioning the right way.

If you find yourself struggling to lose weight if you have either of these disorders, let me challenge you: stop focusing on the extra pounds you have to lose, and start focusing on healing your body and getting your hormones balanced…naturally. 

As we have ALL heard time and time again, we live in an “instant gratification world” where we want IMMEDIATE results based on some short-lived hard work. Even if 60 days seems like forever…it’s not.

Analogy time: Back in “the olden days” 98% of people were in the agriculture industry. This means FARMERS. Whoop, whoop!

What do you think farmers wanted SO BADLY?!? To have HEALTHY, lush, plentiful crops! That was their goal. BUT…they had a process TO GET THERE that we forget about.

Plant seeds. Cultivate. Harvest.

This means they planted their seeds, watered them and took care of them BASICALLY ALL YEAR LONG, and THEN harvested the results after all that work.

I think nowadays we just want to skip that whole “cultivating” process and go straight from planting seeds (which still is hard work) to harvest. But, sweet sister, that’s not the way the world works, and that’s not the way God made our precious bodies. I wish it was, but it’s just not.

We have to practice patience (a fruit of the Spirit) and take sweet, intentional, specialized care of our bodies before we are going to get what we want. It doesn’t happen overnight. It might even take a year or two. (Not what you wanted to hear, I know. But it’s true!)

Galations 6:9 – And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

 

2. TMI – Information Overload

Raise your hand if you are ever feel like you are trying to research ways to help yourself or your symptoms…and you go into complete panic attack because there is SO MUCH information out there, you don’t even know where to begin! – OR – You don’t even ATTEMPT to research natural solutions to heal your body…because the THOUGHT of the information overload freaks the bubbles out of you.

**Everyone raises hand**

It’s true. We live in a time of the internet. Endless, limitless, INFINITE information all at our fingertips. Who wouldn’t get overwhelmed from time to time?

But let’s admit: if MORE INFORMATION were the solution to our problems…we wouldn’t have problems. Where our problems stem from isn’t from lack of information, it’s lack of direction and application.

It’s a scary world to dive into when 50% of studies show this and the other 50% show the opposite. Yikes! Which side to you choose? You mean you will actually have to give up your almost-nightly chocolate ice cream? WHAT A NIGHTMARE. **really it’s not that bad once you are used to not eating your ice cream every night…….trust me.**

If you are someone who is scared of research and expanding your knowledge of your body and what can help it…..OR even if you’re someone who LOVES research like me (and I’m not talking about Web MDing all your symptoms and diagnosing yourself with cancer through the internet…you know who I’m talking to). I mean REAL research. Beneficial research. Questions and answers and solutions. ——-> I HIGHLY (and by highly I mean swear by it) recommend the book “It Starts With Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig.

I am not endorsed to promote this book, I just truly believe it makes everything CLEAR to understand for those who love studying health AND for those who have no idea what they are doing. Even if you think you are well-seasoned in nutritional/health knowledge…I PROMISE this will change your world. If you’re like me and have ADD, you might want to invest in the audiobook instead of the paper one. This will help you understand:

-the cause and effect of unhealthy psychological response to food

-how certain foods trigger an unhealthy hormonal response in your body and how those hormones affect things like PCOS and your thyroid

-how certain foods can permeate and degrade your gut (intestinal) health…where 95% of your immune system is (this is DIRECTLY linked to autoimmune diseases)

-how certain foods initiate an inflammatory response in your body that is linked to heart disease, joint/muscle pain, tendinitis, weight gain, fatigue, migraines…and so much more.

IT SOUNDS SCARY, I KNOW. But it’s REALLY SIMPLE to understand through this book. Don’t just take my word for it…I challenge you to read it or listen to it yourself!

My main point for #2 is… Don’t let fear from making the WRONG choice PARALYZE you from taking any action at all. Do your research (real research…not basing your decisions on someone else’s opinion). Find out about your body and start doing something to heal it and walk forward in your journey! **refer back to #1 when on this journey**

3. Time to be honest with yourself.

Before you read this next paragraph…repeat after me: “You are awesome Kaliste! I promise to not have negative feelings towards you after reading this.” LOL. I put this in here because I LOVE all of you guys and want to make sure we are giving ourselves the BEST chance at a better quality life.

 

This probably won’t apply to everyone, but it might apply to some of you. How do I know this? Because I am one who used to (and still sometimes) falls into this trap.

 

Binge eating. It’s hard to confront, but it’s real. I can tell you that USUALLY after about 2 weeks of being REALLY REALLY good…I usually find myself ready to commit murder to get a tub of chocolate ice cream and some pizza rolls. (not human murder…maybe just like I could kill 100 roaches or mosquitoes all at once…also my house is clean with no bugs. Haha! Don’t worry.)

What happens when I feel this crippling NEED for something TERRIBLE for me???? Well, first, let me say I have been working on this and have gotten fifty times better at self-control. (which by the way…self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. Important!)

Let’s go back to Kaliste from 6 months ago. I would get frustrated that nothing about my physical self was improving…internally or externally. I would make the efforts to eat clean, healthy foods. But let me be clear: when I would say “This isn’t working,” I wasn’t being honest with myself.

I would go on semi-frequent (let’s say 2 times per month for good measure) binges where literally a “cheat meal” would turn into a cheat DAY, and maybe even extend itself to a treat weekend. After all, I will just start again on Monday. 

Nevertheless….the end of the month would creep up and I would be SO FRUSTRATED. Whether I had “only” lost two pounds that month, not lost anything…or maybe even gained a few pounds….my thoughts were “WHY THE HECK ISN’T THIS WORKING?!

The fact is: I wasn’t taking into consideration my point #1, and I also wasn’t being honest with myself. I wasn’t able to say “I gave it my all this month.” ——-> I wasn’t filling myself DAILY with the truth of God, keeping Him close by my side for guidance with self-control and discipline, and I would “talk myself into” having a cheat meal when really, it didn’t align with the deep-cleansing HEALING that my body was so obviously needing.

4. Your body is a temple. Don’t quit on yourself.

Instead of writing a 9 paragraph novel for this section, let me just share a few more of my favorite quotes from the book “Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desires with God, Not Food” by Lysa Terkeurst. (Another book I HIGHLY recommend reading!)

 

  • “Getting healthy isn’t just about losing weight. It’s not limited to adjusting our diet and hoping for good physical results. It’s about recalibrating our souls so that we want to change — spiritually, physically, and mentally. And the battle really is in all three areas.”
  • “Overindulgence is overindulgence. And limitless indulgence in food always has consequences—it compromises our health, dimmishes energy to pursue our calling, and affects the way we feel about ourselves”

  • “So, I’m not on a diet. I’m on a journey with Jesus to learn the fine art of self-discipline for the purpose of holiness.”

  • “Don’t buy into what the scale says or doesn’t say. Trust the effort you are putting into getting healthy. And keep going! Basically I could re-write the whole book right here because every single page is full of revelation. Seriously, you have to stop after each chapter just to let it fully sink into your soul! Taking care of our bodies isn’t just for weight loss, or just for this or that. It’s so much bigger than that.

 

 

SUMMARY:

Have patience in the process. It could take months, or even years to build yourself back up to optimal health. The pounds will come off as our hormones balance out. It CAN and WILL happen, we just have to put our priorities in line. Hormones and health FIRST, weight loss follows in its footsteps.

Don’t be afraid to start taking action. Learn TRUTHS about your body and natural ways to improve your symptoms and take control of the root of the problem. Trust me, there ARE ways to help yourself.

Be honest with yourself. Be honest with yourself AND have patience. Persistence + consistency + time WILL produce results.

Don’t rely on your own strength in times of weakness, because you’re likely to fail. Rely on GOD’S strength in times of weakness. He is there to carry us through.
